THE All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) is getting tough with private engineering colleges and technical institutions that are lacking in basic infrastructure or compromising on the salary of teaching staff. The council has also become cautious in approving any fresh affiliation.
Talking to presspersons here, the AICTE Chairman, Prof H.P. Dixit, said that at its meeting on February 12, the council had decided to form a team comprising representatives of State Governments and universities to carry out inspections in all such institutes and enforce the suggested norms. "If necessary we will also de-affiliate the institutes flouting the norms."
Mr Dixit said that a large number of private technical institutions were allegedly appointing teachers on a salary as low as Rs 5,000 per month and that too on eight months' contract. "Such trends are extremely disturbing and should be stopped to ensure the quality of education," he said.
The AICTE chairman was in the city in connection with a seminar on `Higher technical education in West Bengal: Prospects and issues'.
Prof Dixit said that the institutes should collaborate with industry to identify specific curricular requirements.
