SEMICONDUCTOR giant STMicroelectronics expects the first phase of its proposed mega campus at Greater Noida to be operational by the end of this year.

"Last year, we had announced a new campus at Greater Noida entailing an area of 1,00,000 sq mtrs. The first phase of the project is expected to be operational by end of this year," Mr Pasquale Pistorio, President and CEO of STMicroelectronics told Business Line.

The company has already announced an investment of $100 million over the next five years in the India.

"The first phase of the new campus will have a capacity for 1,500 engineers. Overall our target is to have 5,000 professionals in India by 2010," Mr Pistorio added.

STMicroelectronics currently has about 1,650 professionals in India seated across centres in Noida and Bangalore.

The company has three centres in Noida housing 1,600 professionals, while the Bangalore centre has 50. In addition, it has marketing offices in Mumbai and Bangalore.

India has now become ST's hub for developing cutting-edge technology for applications such as set top box, DVD, wireless-telecom, multimedia, imaging and automotive, and also plays a key role in ST's worldwide R&D activities.

In the R&D arena, the key achievements of the Noida site include contribution to the development of the industry's first design platform on 90-nanometre deep sub-micron CMOS technology.

In the product design field, the key milestones include the development and industrialisation of products for automotive, consumer, computer, wireless-telecom and industrial applications.

ST India was also a major contributor to the development of the Nomadik chip that enables portable terminals to play music, take pictures, record video and host two-way visual communication in real time.
