IA board approves lease of 3 more wide-bodied aircraft

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 16

THE Indian Airlines (IA) board, which met here today, approved a proposal to lease three more wide-bodied aircraft, taking the total number of such leased aircraft to 12.

With this leased fleet, IA would be able to take on competition from both domestic and international airlines. In December, the Government allowed private sector domestic airlines to start operating to any part of the globe except to the Gulf region. Incidentally, last September, the IA board had approved a proposal to lease nine wide-bodied aircraft.

The airline proposes to induct the 12 leased aircraft in October-November this year and March-April next year. This should allow IA to decide on which routes to deploy the leased wide-bodied aircraft for the 2005 winter and 2006 summer schedules which start in October-November and March-April, respectively.

An in-house committee of the airline had identified certain international routes, including some on which IA operates even now, as being suitable for operating wide-bodied aircraft.
