The DC-10 aircraft of the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital stands on the tarmac of Kolkata airport on Thursday. Since its launch in 1982, the hospital has travelled to 72 countries. It has come to Kolkata after 10 years and will go on to New Delhi next. During its three-week stay in the city, experts onboard will provide hands-on training to doctors and eye bank technicians from West Bengal and the North-East, and Nepal, besides treating and operating upon visually challenged people. ORBIS has trained more than 72,000 ophthalmologists, nurses, biomedical engineers and other healthcare workers. Its sponsors include Alcon Inc, a renowned eyecare company, and FedEx, besides others such as Honeywell, United Airlines, Standard Chartered and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
