Trade & Labour Unions HC restrains Chennai box terminal staff from striking work Our Bureau
Chennai , Feb. 17 THE Madras High Court has granted an interim injunction restraining Chennai Container Terminal (CCT) workmen from going on strike or indulging in a `go slow'. The Court has recognised the CCT as a public utility service and permitted it to bring in contractors/outside operators to keep the terminal fully operational, according to a CCT press release. It may be recalled that last week four non-management staff, including the president and general secretary of CCTL Employees' Union, were suspended pending inquiry for disrupting a management meeting. These employees, whose port entry passes have been withdrawn by Chennai Port Trust, have refused to submit to the disciplinary procedure, necessary under the provisions of law, and have instigated their co-workmen to "go slow" in operations. Due to this, the rate of vessel operations has dropped by more than half, to eight moves per hour. This has caused great hardship to the trade as exports are delayed and vessel operators are incurring loss, the press release said. The CCT employees union responded by issuing a 15-day strike notice against the management's `unfair labour practice.'
