Italian team seeks tie-ups with Kerala entrepreneurs

Kochi , Feb. 17

A BUSINESS delegation from Venice, Italy, has evinced interest in forging alliances with entrepreneurs in Kerala in the areas of boat building, seafood, food processing and information technology.

"We would like to establish business relationships with Kerala," said Ms Sabrina Danieli, Director (Foreign Relationship) of Unindustria Venezia, the industry association of Venice.

Earlier, Ms Danieli, on behalf of the industry association, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mr P. H. Kurian, Managing Director of the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), to explore opportunities and promote joint business entities.

Under the MoU, KSIDC will identify business opportunities and entrepreneurs in the State as per the requirements of the Venetian businessmen. The business delegation is part of a team that was accompanying the Italian President, Mr Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who was in India during February 12-16.

The delegation's interest in Kerala was triggered by the success of an earlier venture in the State, Kerafibertex International Pvt Ltd at Kochi, which is promoted by the Giacomini Group in Italy.

The company, a 100 per cent export-oriented unit, manufactures PVC-backed coir mats. Set up with an investment of Rs 25 crore, Kerafibertex today has a turnover of Rs 60 crore and employs 120 people.
