Paper mills plan price hike

Badal Sanyal

Kolkata , Feb. 17

GIVEN depleted inventories, almost all large paper mills are contemplating a hike in writing and printing paper prices, on an average by Rs 1,000 a tonne, from March 1.

These mills last revised their prices in October 2004.

Available information from the local paper trade suggests that large mills find the current demand and supply situation conducive to another revision as fresh buying support from textbook publishing and educational sectors is set to pick up from February-end.

However, the prices of duplex boards are expected to remain unchanged following better inventory position at the mills.

The firming up of writing and printing paper prices in the international market also seems to have encouraged large paper mills to revise prices.

On the contrary, large mills feel that they can now earn more by exporting specialty paper rather than supplying more of writing and printing paper to domestic market.

The sources said that large mills were convinced that the demand and supply gap would widen with the higher growth in demand while additional production capacity is unlikely to materialise in the near future.
