THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The IT practical test for students appearing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination next month began at 1,929 of the 2,652 school centres and at 68 special IT examination centres in different parts of the State on Thursday.

An official spokesman said here that all candidates would be covered by February 28, by when the exam is scheduled to end.

It is for the first time that an IT practical examination is being conducted as part of the SSLC examination.

As many as 4,72,809 students are appearing for the test, the conduct of which was mired in controversy after a powerful teachers' union took objection to the choice of the software deployed. The exam was originally scheduled to begin from February 9.

The `Soft-exam' software featured six programmes out of which a student was expected to attempt two with two-and-a-half marks each.
