TN Chamber plea on service tax

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has suggested levy of service tax on those goods transport agents who are registered under the Companies Act, if the Government was particular of the levy on the agents, at a meeting of the committee constituted by the Central Government to examine issues relating to collection and payment of service tax on goods transport agents, held at New Delhi on February 15 and 16.

As the next meeting of the committee is scheduled to be held only on March 11 and the extended date of registration of service tax expires on February 28, a further extension of the date of registration up to March 31, has been sought by the members at the meeting.

A statement here said the Chamber President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, had submitted a memorandum to the committee.

Further, he said that the officials agreed to consider favourably the request for the extension of the date of registration. In the memorandum, the association has pointed out that the notification shifting the liability is ultra virus and against the judgement of the apex court.

The notification has created a novel situation in which conditions for exemption apply to one person and burden of tax liability fall on the other person.

Further, the sectors covered under the said seven categories may not get lorries to transport goods.
