Drive to help women SHGs become plantation owners in Nilgiris

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Feb. 18

TWELVE women SHGs (Self Help Groups) in the Nilgiris are to become proud owners of 25 acres of tea plantations within the next fortnight.

The Rural Development Organisation (RDO) Trust Executive Director, Mr N.K. Perumal, told Business Line that the Trust had envisioned the launch of Women Owned Plantations to mitigate rural poverty.

"In the first phase, 25 acres in the Melur Panchayat area is being transferred to the 12 SHGs, who belong to the Scheduled Caste. We are targeting at 2,500 acres in a span of five years,'' he said.

With banks willing to extend financial support and the 50 per cent subsidy coming in from the Tamil Nadu Adi-Dravidar Housing and Development Corporation, the RDO Trust is confident of reaching larger sections of the rural populace. A nationalised bank has sanctioned an amount of Rs 75 lakh towards the first phase of this project.

The process of transferring the title deeds in favour of the 12 Women SHGs has just started. The land currently identified for transfer belongs to an estate/tea garden at Kollakombu in Melur Panchayat.

Mr Perumal claims that the message of women SHGs taking over estate reins had spread in the belt. "We have lot of enquiries now. We have identified 40 acres in Gudalur area and are confident of roping in 2,500 acres in five years.''

The RDO Trust is also planning to help the SHGs set up women-owned tea factories eventually, when they have roped in about 500 acres.
