UCH Heritage Health Care Learning Centre, a joint venture between United Church Homes, the US-based not for profit healthcare organisation, and the Heritage Hospital, here, was launched today.
The centre would train nurses to qualify for jobs in the US.
The CEO of United Church Homes (UCH) and Board member of UCH Heritage Health Care, Dr Brian Allen, who inaugurated the facility said, the US is facing a shortage of 125,000 nursing staff now. The numbers are estimated to reach 1.4 million by 2010.
India is the first country, from where UCH is trying to source quality nursing professionals, and the Centre at the Heritage Hospital is the first step in that direction, he told newspersons.
"Nurses from India are dedicated and committed, hence they are most sought after by healthcare institutions in the US. UCH plays an important role in training them to fit into the work environment there," Dr Allen said.
The Managing Director, Heritage Hospital, Mr K.R. Gangadharan, said about 30 nurses would be put through the training course in Hyderabad. The training will help nurses pass the relevant qualifying exams, as well as get the required registration in the US hospital.
With the UCH having 40 branches and 87 years standing in healthcare in the US, the training on computers, latest study material and English skills, are expected to benefit the nurses looking for opportunities in the US.
Mr Gangadharan said in view of the huge demand, plans are to start similar training courses in Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore etc.
In Andhra Pradesh training facilities have been established in Kurnool, Raichur, Ananthapur and also Bangalore in Karnataka.
