.in domain registrations cross 50,000

Moumita Bakshi

New Delhi , Feb. 18

THE `.in' country code domain name registrations have crossed the 50,000 mark within the first two days of opening of real-time registrations for the general public.

"By today afternoon, over 50,000 domain names had been registered in the general public category. The performance reports coming from our technical partners suggest that `.in' domain name registration process is faster than `.com' and `.net' registration process worldwide," Mr Amitabh Singhal, Acting CEO, National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), said.

Of these, Net4India registered close to 19,000 domain names.

The registrations for the recently-launched `.in' country code Internet domain name had opened for the general public on February 16, and had attracted nearly 24,000 domain name registrations within the first hour.

The `.in' domain name registry had received over 4,000 applications from registered Indian trademark holders during the sunrise period from January 1-21, including applications from among the top 100 brands in India and worldwide.

The Government announced a new policy for `.in' Internet domain name registration focussing on hassle-free online procedure and reduced pricing in October last year.

The move was aimed at strengthening Indian identity in the Internet space, while also ensuring a greater circulation of traffic within the country.

The move to revamp the .in domain registry assumed significance as the number of .in domain names registered till last year did not truly represent the penetration of IT in India, which has established itself as a software services destination.

An overcautious registration policy and absence of infrastructure for registration had hindered the growth of .in domain.

Our Chennai Bureau reports: The Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, has reserved the domain name dmaran.in at Good Luck Domains, a `.in' accredited registrar.

In a statement, the registrar said it had so far registered more than 7000 `.in' names.

It says that it would charge Rs 730 a year for `.in' domains and Rs 395 a year for `.co.in' domains and for other third level names.

It also offers two months of free Web hosting for all 12-month Web-hosting agreements.
