`Enact law to wipe out corruption'

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Feb. 18

THE Karnataka Lokayukta, Mr Justice N. Venkatachala, has said the Government should initiate action to bring down corruption among public servants.

Delivering the Founders' Day Lecture at the corporate office of Karnataka Bank Ltd here on Friday, he said there would be total chaos if the Government fails to bring down corruption.

Terming unabated corruption among the public servants as a national concern, he said it is not difficult for the elected representative to enact a law to bring down corruption. "It is unfortunate that they (elected representatives) do not have the courage and the conviction to do so," he said.

Though the Lokayukta has made efforts to bring down corruption, its efforts have not achieved the expected results.

Mr Justice Venkatachala said corruption is worse than terrorism. While terrorism kills a few people, corruption wipes out the vital economy of society, he added.

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Karnataka Bank Ltd, Mr Anantakrishna, who presided over the function, said the turnover of the bank is around Rs 15,000 crore, with deposits of more than Rs 9,200 crore. The bank has a staff strength of over 4,400 and a client base of 2.52 millions.

The bank will soon introduce Internet banking and Visa debit cards, he said.
