Godfrey Phillips to stop using `Red & White' on awards mascot

K.V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad , Feb. 19

GODFREY Phillips India, a cigarette and tobacco products company, would soon stop using the Red and White reference on the bravery awards mascot.

In fact, the word `Awards' has been taken off from this year. This is to expand the scope of `bravery'.

The awards were called `Red and White Bravery Awards' for some time since the annual edition began 16 years ago.

The mascot also carried the name of the company, Godfrey Phillips, but in small print.

"This was because we were identified with the cigarette brand in most parts of the country," Mr Sandeep Kumar, Senior Vice-President, told Business Line.

"But we have decided to bring the company's name up prominently on the bravery mascot from this year and do away with Red and White," he said.

The award, being given to brave people in 16 States, would be graduated to national level, beginning this year.

"We will select the bravest from among the winners in 16 States in April," he said.

Explaining the reason behind removing the word `Awards' from the tagline, Mr Sandeep said some other ideas like organising a film fete or an exhibition, all with the theme bravery, would be considered in the coming months.

Mr Sandeep was here in connection with the presentation of 13th edition of the bravery awards in Andhra Pradesh.

Asked about expanding the bravery awards concept to other States, he said the idea was to cover all the States. "We will next cover Tamil Nadu," he said.
