Budget expectations

Whereas the retired who get pension are eligible for the Standard Deduction under Section 16, those who have retired but without pension and solely dependent on interest income do not get any relief. The middle-income group who do not get any pension are the worst affected.

The deduction under Section 80L is very meagre and it applies to all. Can we expect the pragmatic Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, to give some relief to this group in the coming Budget? It can be similar to Standard Deduction, limited to those who do not get pension, with the total income not being above Rs 2,00,000, and to those pensioners getting not more than Rs 60,000 per annum.
