Kerala: `Foreign varsities welcome'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government is of the view that there is no harm in allowing foreign universities in, subject to checks and balances.

The Education Minister, Mr E.T. Mohammed Basheer, conveyed the Government's position to a visiting Parliamentary Committee on Human Resource Development here on Saturday.

The Government also agreed in principle to allowing private universities to function in the State, though several aspects of their operation were open to debate. A regulatory body should fix the fee and admission norms. There should be transparency in their functioning and they should be allowed in only select areas of education.

Mr Basheer suggested that the Centre bring forward a legislation to clear the confusion caused by conflicting court verdicts on admission norms and fee structure in self-financing professional and technical courses. The law should be ideally included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
