Small savings nearing record in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is closing in on a record Rs 3,500 crore in collection by way of small savings under the National Savings Scheme this financial year, an official spokesman quoted a visiting Mr Anil Bhattacharya, Chief of the National Savings Institute in Nagpur, as saying here.

Mr Bhattacharya had held discussions with the Minister for Finance, Mr Vakkom Purushothaman, to explore ways for maximising the collections. The spokesman further quoted him as saying that he was impressed by the State's performance.

The State's small savings target for this financial year is Rs 3,250 crore in net collections. As on December 31, 2004, the collections had aggregated to Rs 2,232 crore, which is 70 per cent more than the Rs1,310 crore achieved during the corresponding period last year.
