Inaugurating a two-day seminar on `Mineral resources of Kerala - Developmental perspectives,' he said that the State had the potential to set up more mineral-based industries thanks to the rich reserves of mineral resources.

There was a need for undertaking scientific studies on the possibilities of setting up mineral-based industries in the joint and private sectors. The Government was aware of the need to simplify existing rules and regulations to facilitate development of the mining sector.

Among those who spoke on the occasion were Mr S.D. Pawar, Deputy Director General, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Southern Region; Dr M. Baba, Director, Centre for Earth Science Studies; and Dr M.M. Mukherjee, Director, GSI.
