`Need public-private participation on AIDS awareness'

THE Maharashtra Governor, Mr S.M. Krishna, has stressed the need for public-private participation in creating awareness about HIV/AIDS.
Inaugurating the State-level `HIV/AIDS and drug abuse awareness conference for student nurses and faculty', organised by the Bhandary Foundation, here on Sunday, he said that there should be a campaign to create awareness on HIV/AIDS.
Public-private participation model, which is being followed in pulse polio immunisation drive, can be followed in creating awareness on HIV/AIDS, he said.
The mission mode approach should be made to eradicate AIDS from the country, he said.
Urging parliamentarians to make more efforts to tackle the bane of AIDS in the country, he said the Government should come out with a legislation on its control.
The Joint Convenor of Parliamentary Forum on HIV/AIDS, Mr J.D. Seelam, said that the forum is preparing a draft for AIDS legislation. He said that legislators' forums should be set up in every State to tackle AIDS-related issues.
Dr Srinivas Gowda, Registrar of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, said that the number of AIDS cases is increasing in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland.
