Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables Banana research centre signs pact with TNAU Our Correspondent
Madurai , Feb. 20 THE National Research Centre for Banana (NRCB) at Tiruchi and the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to facilitate TNAU Post-graduates pursue research projects at the centre. According to the NRCB Director, Dr S. Sathiamoorthy, the centre has been recognised as an institute for conducting post-graduate research relating to thesis requirements of the research scholars of M.Sc and Ph.D programmes. The MoU would be effective for three years. NRCB has received a grant of Rs 39.8 lakh from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to take up three research projects for a period of three years. According to Mr Sathiamoorthy, the research will be on banana wilt disease, virus attacks, diagnosis and sustainable soil health maintenance. The wilt disease affected a number of varieties such as rasthali, red banana, hill banana, karpuravalli and monthan. Various botanical aspects of the crop including morphology and pathogenes would be studied. A comparative analysis of the attack on various types of crops would be taken up. A method to protect the crop from the disease would be evolved. A sum of Rs 15.20 lakh would be spent on the project, he said.
