THE ICAR's Deputy Director General (Horticulture and Crop Sciences), Dr G. Kalloo, has said that the institute's foremost mission to modernise the seed sector.

Inaugurating the 20th annual group meeting of National Seeds Project at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Dr Kalloo emphasised the need to initiate good research project on seed.

The ICAR, he said, has initiated 36 network research projects in different centres, but the new projects should focus on seed physiology, pathology, molecular biology, seed storage etc.

Expressing concern about the wide yield variations in hybrid rice seed production, he said while there is scope to accelerate the production, there is greater need to protect the seed from pathogens.
