Partial response to bandh in Madurai

MADURAI: The trade bandh called on Monday to protest the implementation of VAT evoked a partial response.

While those affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Vanigarsanga Peravai joined the bandh, members of the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry kept their shops open.

The District President of the Peravai, Mr Thangavelu said VAT would severely affect large number of small traders.

The District President of Tamil Nadu Traders' Service Association, Mr Sayyed Gani, said that the bandh call has been rejected as traders understood the benefits of the VAT system. However, with reference to service tax, the Association would try to impress the government for a just solution, he added.

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in a statement, said trade and industry totally `spurned the call for bandh.
