Events Chennai to host plastics expo from Friday Our Bureau
Chennai , Feb. 22 AN investment of $9.5 billion is expected in polymeric material to meet the increasing requirement in India, according to Dr Sushil K. Verma, Director General, Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET). He said it is estimated that by 2010, the production of polymeric materials would reach a yearly level of 12.5 million tonnes and the per capita consumption would increase from 4.2 kg to 10-12 kg. At present, about 4.5 million tonnes of polymeric material are produced in India and 25 per cent is exported to the SAARC region, the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries and South America, said Dr Verma, also the Chairman of the Indian Plastic Exposition '05 (IPLEX '50). At a press conference, he announced that IPLEX '05, a four-day exhibition, would be held on February 25-28 at the Chennai Trade Centre. The Tamilnadu Plastics Manufacturers Association (TAPMA) will host the exhibition. He said there would be free counselling at the TAPMA pavilion for anybody who wanted to start a plastic industry, especially women and self-help groups. The mission of IPLEX '05 is to promote the growth of plastic processing industry all over India, particularly in South India, he said. The exhibition would provide opportunities for the manufacturers of processing machinery, auxiliary equipment and finished goods to showcase their capabilities and widen their market base. It would also dispel the misgivings about plastics in the minds of the public. Mr B. Swaminathan, Convenor, Indian Plastics Exposition '05, said that with the introduction of value-added tax (VAT) and the increasing popularity of Just in Time logistics management, the plastic industry is set to boom by about 60 per cent.
