Coimbatore gears up for The Hindu job fair

R.Y. Narayanan

Coimbatore , Feb. 22

WITH time ticking for the opening of `The Hindu Opportunities Job Fair' here on Saturday, there is lot of excitement in the air. The importance of the event could be gauged from the fact that Coimbatore is the second place where The Hindu is organising it after Chennai and candidates from all over Tamil Nadu (other than Chennai city) and from neighbouring Kerala are expected to attend. In tune with the present job market trend, IT and ITES companies dominate the list of participating institutions. 32 companies will participate in the two-day fair which is open for final-year graduate/PG students, fresh graduates/PGs, diploma holders and professionals with up to five years' experience.

When The Hindu organised the job fair first in Chennai from October 15 to 17, around 45,000 people visited the fair. Applicants with engineering background constituted nearly half the number of those who registered. Interestingly, the number of male job seekers at 35,556 was more than three times that of females which were only 11,906. People with graduate/PG degrees in Arts, Commerce and Science also attended in sizeable number.

According to Mr V. Kalidas, Chief Advertisement Manager, The Hindu, at the Chennai fair 29 companies participated and about 25,000 jobs were on offer. According to the feedback from companies, almost 10,000 job offers were made during and after the fair.

In view of the enthusiastic response elicited from the Chennai fair, it has been decided to extend its reach to more cities during this year. After Coimbatore, the fair will be held in Bangalore during April-May, Hyderabad during June-July and in Chennai during September-October.

There would be tests on aptitude and skills conducted by individual companies at the venue apart from spot interviews.

In case they could not meet some of the companies due to rush, they should register themselves using their registration numbers at each of the stall which would help the organisers in providing the CVs of candidates to the companies after the fair.
