EAST Godavari and Visakhapatnam have huge potential in the mining of precious and semi-precious stones, the State Minister for Mines and Geology, Ms P. Sabitha Reddy, said.
The Government has evolved a policy to tap these resources. In the scheduled and non-forest areas of the State, mining lease will be granted only to tribals/tribal co-operative societies promoted by a joint venture company formed by the Andhra Pradesh Mineral Development Corporation and the Tribal Welfare Corporation.
In the forest areas, lease will be granted only with the consent of the Forest Department, which also has the responsibility to protect the forest area from illicit mining, said Ms Reddy, in a written reply to questions in the State Legislative Assembly, during the question hour.
Linking rivers: The State Government has asked the National Water Development Agency to alter its proposals to ensure assured irrigation to the proposed ayacut under theVelugonda, Telugu Ganga Project.
