Hi-tech gadgets gathering dust

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Feb. 22

A HI-TECH system, meant to be used by the State Government to monitor attendance of children in schools, has turned out to be a non-starter.

The State Government had purchased 4,700 personal digital assistants (PDAs), to be used in select schools last year to keep track of students' attendance in electronic format. However, according to the State Minister for School Education, Ms N. Rajyalaxmi, not even a single PDA has been used for the purpose so far.

The main reason, she said, was that the software developed by the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad, was not compatible with the PDAs.

In a written reply to questions raised in the State Legislative Assembly by Mr D.L. Ravindra Reddy and Ms K. Prabhavathamma today, the Minister said even the desktop software developed by the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Hyderabad, was not working properly.
