HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences' (APAS) annual convention, scheduled to be held at Bapatla on February 25, would focus on biotechnology.

Three seminars would be held on agricultural biotechnology, environment engineering and biotechnology and pharmaceutical biotechnology. Dr V.A. Parthasarathy, Director of Indian Institute of Spices Research (Calicut) would speak on recent advances in molecular approaches for crop protection, while Prof P. Parthasaradhi, Department of Environmental Studies (University of Delhi), would speak on negative aspects of genetic engineering.

The session on pharmaceutical biotechnology would deal with issues like anti-cancer drug development, bioactive natural products and bioinformatics research. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Prof M. Bhagvanth Rao, the newly elected President of APAS, said Dr M.V. Rao, Chairman of AP Netherlands Biotechnology Programme, would inaugurate the convention.
