Constructing sea walls

This has reference to the article "Sea Walls no match for Tsunami, says scientist", (Business Line, February 21), which quoted Dr Kurup on the ineffectiveness of constructing sea walls against Tsunami waves.

But those living along the coast, such as myself, know that constructing sea walls and wave breakers not only safeguard against natural calamities such as tsunamis but also minimise the damage caused during the monsoons.

It will be especially useful to fishermen to have high rising sea walls so that the damages caused during monsoon time will be minimal. There is no point visiting or surveying the area after the damage is done.
