Kerala Engineers claim discrimination

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Irrigation Engineers Association has expressed its resentment over the "unwarranted weightage" being accorded to diploma holders in recruitment to the Water Resources Department.

It said this has brought about a situation where B.Tech. and M.Tech. degree holders from prestigious institutions, such as the Regional Engineering Colleges, are being made to languish under diploma holders who, originally recruited to serve under, managed to bypass their superiors for promotions. An association representative said even non-existent vacancies are being invoked to accommodate the diploma holders. In doing so, the High Court order of July 20, 2000, is being misrepresented to their advantage.

The Public Works Department, through its order dated October 3, 1994, brought to an end the practice of promoting diploma holders over degree holders. But the facility was not being extended to the Water Resources Department.
