Auto cluster in Aurangabad soon

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Feb. 23

THE streets of Aurangabad and surrounding areas could start humming with new prototype automobiles, once the Aurangabad Automobile Industrial Cluster (AAIC) gets flagged off some time later this year.

The Maharashtra Government has already created a special purpose vehicle towards setting up the cluster that will cost Rs 31.45 crore.

The Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA) and the Government will jointly set up the cluster. A decision to this effect was taken by the Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, on Tuesday.

AAIC will come up at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation estate at Waluj in central Maharashtra.

This would be the second such facility in the State The first one has been set up at Pune, where auto giants such as Bajaj, Tata Motors and Kinetic have manufacturing facilities.

Speaking to newspersons about his decision, Mr Deshmukh said, "Auto industry is getting concentrated in the Aurangabad region as companies such as Skoda already have manufacturing facility there. Therefore, we are developing the area and auto industries wanting to do business in Maharashtra can go there."

The cluster will have a product raw material testing and inspection laboratory costing of Rs 9 crore. An R&D centre for product innovation with tool room and CAD/CAM facilities will also be created at a cost of Rs 14.26 crore.

A marketing and export promotion cell, waste management plant, warehouses for aluminium and steel, logistic and packaging unit will also be a part of the cluster. This investment in Aurangabad is a part of the Rs 3,307-crore corpus that the Maharashtra Government is pumping in to develop the Marathwada region in the next five years.

The State Government is also planning to spend about Rs 1,065 crore on a 1,567-km road redevelopment project.
