Kandla Port handles record volume of wheat cargo

Our Bureau

Kochi , Feb. 23

THE Kandla Port has registered an all-time record in cargo handling by loading 24,388 tonnes of wheat in a single day, surpassing the previous best of 19,233 tonnes in 2003.

The port had handled the cargo on February 5 from the vessel MV Ariston. The vessel was berthed at 1845 hours on February 4 and commenced operations at 2005 hours the same day. It completed the loading operations at 1600 hours the next day, a press release here said. The cargo was loaded for the Philippines.

The Port Chairman, Mr A. Janardhana Rao, said that breaking previous records and achieving new ones had become a regular feature these days following measures taken by the port to keep pace with the changing requirements of the maritime trade.

Kandla, a tidal port, has also introduced night navigation facility, thereby becoming a full-fledged round-the-clock navigational port. Night navigation, which has been partially available, has now been given to shipping lines 24 hours.
