Kolkata , Feb. 23

THE West Bengal Government is planning to invite private participation in marketing the products of handloom and rural handicrafts sector. Restructuring of the existing state-run marketing agencies is also on the cards.

Addressing the members of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI) here on Wednesday, the State Minister for Cottage and Small-Scale Industry, Mr Bansogopal Chowdhury, said that the handloom weavers and rural artisans were facing a serious problem as the existing infrastructure has failed to live up to expectations.

"We are now gearing up for a major policy shift and restructuring exercise in this sector, which is expected to be finalised in a month or two", he said, not willing to disclose further details.

He said that the State Government has also planned to set up a hosiery park in Cossipore near Kolkata in joint venture with the hosiery manufacturers'association.

Earlier, Mr S.N. Nundy, President of BNCCI, said that as part of an initiative taken by the Union Government, the chamber has floated a sub-contracting exchange for the small and medium enterprises in Bengal.

The exchange will provide information on the jobs to be outsourced by the large industrial sector on a daily basis.
