Kolkata , Feb. 24

THE Rs 1,600-crore Ramco group in Tamil Nadu, with interests in textiles, cement, building products and software, has finalised a business strategy aimed at expanding the group's manufacturing operations beyond the south.

The group's first such venture to manufacture fibre cement sheet along with cement grinding unit is now ready at Kharagpur in West Bengal, to be inaugurated by the State Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, on Saturday.

The Rs 33-crore Khargapur project is being implemented by one of the group companies - Ramco Industries Ltd - and will have an annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes of fibre cement sheets and 2,00,000 tonnes of cement. Both the products will be marketed in the eastern and north-eastern States.

Explaining the reason for selecting West Bengal as an investment destination, the group's Chairman, Mr P.R. Ramasubrahmaney Raja, told newspersons here on Thursday that the State's investment climate was conducive. Based on the experience gathered during the implementation of the Kharagpur project, the group has decided to set up another one-million-tonne-per-annum capacity advanced cement grinding plant in the State, entailing an investment of Rs 50-60 crore.

This apart, Mr Raja said that the group was also actively considering setting up a textiles processing and dyeing unit in the State.

The group has approached the State Government for land to expand . Mr Raja plans to bring the Ramco model of industrial culture to the State along with investment and modern technology in order to ensure cordial industrial relations.

The group is also setting two more fibre cement sheet plants each with a production capacity of 80,000 tonnes of sheet per annum. One plant is being set up at Bhuj in Gujarat and the other at Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.
