Chennai , Feb. 24

ORCHID Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd has announced an exclusive agreement with Alpharma Inc on Thursday, for marketing its select non-antibiotic generic formulations in the US and Europe.

Under this agreement, Orchid will exclusively develop and manufacture 10 non-antibiotic formulations in specific dosage forms and strengths for exclusive distribution and marketing by Alpharma in the US and Europe.

Orchid has commenced the process of creating facilities for manufacturing these products. The facilities will be production-ready in a couple of months, company sources have told Business Line.

These 10 oral formulations fall under speciality, chronic therapeutic segments such as cardio-vascular (CVS) and central nervous system (CNS) categories. The current market size of the 10 products in the US and Europe aggregates to around $10 billion (Rs 4,300 crore). Orchid would commence supply of these products once they go off patent progressively from 2007 based on Orchid's regulatory filings and approvals.

Alpharma would provide development funding to Orchid based on milestones, while the net profits from marketing would be shared between the partners. The funding would be required to meet development costs and expenses related to filing and getting various approvals. Besides the 10 non-cephalosporin products to be taken up for development this year under the new arrangement, there is opportunity to add products in the subsequent years, said a release from the company.

A global leader in cephalosporin antibiotics, Orchid has chalked out plans to replicate its regulated generics model in diverse therapeutic groups. Orchid is establishing new US FDA compliant infrastructure to develop and manufacture drugs in these non-cephalosporin segments. The bulk actives facility is being set up in Aurangabad and the formulations facility in Irungattukottai, near Chennai. Both these facilities are versatile, multi-purpose and modular in nature and will be progressively commissioned during the first half of this year.
