Chennai Terminal makes a plea to feeder operators

Chennai , Feb. 25

CHENNAI Container Terminal Ltd, which operates the container terminal at the Chennai port, has urged the Chennai feeder operators to call off or defer by a week the congestion surcharge of $50 a TEU, which they plan to levy from Friday.

According to a press release from Chennai Container Terminal, the surcharge is unjustified as there is no congestion at the terminal.

There has been a steady performance even after the go-slow announced by the workers.

Crane operators from elsewhere have been brought in following an order by the Madras High Court on February 16.

In the last two days the terminal has been handling 1,300 quay crane moves a day, which is the equivalent of about 1,700 TEUs a day.

The yard inventory is about 1,600 TEUs and three vessels are waiting at anchorage, which is not an indication of congestion and does not justify a surcharge of this magnitude, the release said.
