Pondicherry , Feb. 27

HCL Peripherals, a unit of HCL Infosystems Ltd and manufacturer of information technology peripherals, hopes to double its manufacturing of CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors to about one million in the next couple of years, according to the company's Executive Vice-President, Mr S. Pattabiraman.

To meet this growth, the company plans to expand its Pondicherry facility by investing Rs 3-4 crore on equipment and infrastructure, he told Business Line. "We are currently working on our expansionplan. We have so far invested over Rs 10 crore on infrastructure and equipment in Pondicherry," he said.

According to Mr Pattabiraman, the company hopes to report a turnover of Rs 300 crore for the fiscal ending June 2005, against Rs 190 crore in the previous year.

"The market for personal computer is bullish, and we are gearing up to meet the industry demand. We are also exploring plans to export monitors," he said.

The company, which is currently the largest Indian manufacturer of CRT monitors, plans to close this fiscal ending June with five lakh monitors, compared with 3.2 lakh last fiscal and 1.6 lakh in 2002-03, he said.

According to Mr Pattabiraman, the company sells 60-70 per cent of its monitors to its parent, and the rest to firms such as Zenith, Accel, Ingram Micro and PCS. It also manufactures thin client (server-based computing), unix terminals and mechanical keyboards at Pondicherry, where around 200 employees are working, he said.

Mr Pattabiraman said that there was increased demand for thin clients from government and banking and financial sectors. The company manufactures around 12,000 units a month compared to 80-90 three years ago.

At Pondicherry, the company also manufactures LCD monitor, mechanical keyboards and life scan cables.
