Railway Budget Kanara Chamber hails Rly Budget Our Bureau
Mangalore , Feb. 27 THE Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has said that the proposals of Railway Budget 2005-06 will boost the overall development of coastal Karnataka. The KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, told Business Line here on Saturday that for the first time, Dakshina Kannada district has got four new trains. Two of them will run between Mangalore and Bangalore and one between Mangalore and Sravanabelgaloa, after the completion of gauge conversion between Mangalore and Hassan. This indicates that the Government intends to complete the project as early as possible. The completion of the project will bring more cargo traffic to the New Mangalore Port. Currently, most of the container cargoes from the hinterland of New Mangalore Port are either being transported to Tuticorin, Chennai, or Kochi ports due to lack of rail connectivity, he said. The proposal to introduce Mangalore-Shravanabelagola Passenger will help in exploiting tourism potential of both the regions, as Shravanabelagola will celebrate the `Mahamastakabhisheka' of Lord Gomateshwara on February 8 next year. The event, which is being held once in 12 years, is likely to attract lakhs of devotees from other parts of the country. One more train, Mangalore-Madgaon Jan Shatabdi Express, will run six days a week on the Konkan Railway route, covering the entire coastal Karnataka. "KCCI is of the view that the proposals of the Railway Budget will give boost to the overall development of coastal Karnataka," he added. Welcoming the proposals, the former KCCI President, Mr Giridhar Prabhu, said the completion of Mangalore-Hassan railway line will help transport nearly five million tonnes of iron ore cargo, bringing down the number of ore-laden lorries between Bellary-Hospet and Mangalore regions.
