Cost of aircraft acquisitions by IA to be finalised soon

Mumbai , Feb. 27

TALKS to finalise the cost of aircraft acquisition by Indian Airlines are currently on and are likely to be completed in the next seven to 10 days.

According to the Secretary, Civil Aviation, Mr Ajay Prasad, the Civil Aviation Ministry will send its recommendations for Cabinet approval, after which prices will be sent out in March or April. The entire process is expected to be completed in the March-April period, he said.

He was speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of a seminar on aviation here on Saturday.

Mr Prasad said work on the upgradation of the Delhi airport would be carried out in a phased manner and could begin by August or September this year. The plan is to have a good airport and terminal infrastructure in place by March 2010, before the start of the Commonwealth Games later that year.

The expansion will take into consideration traffic growth over the next 20 years and budget for traffic of 80 million by 2025. The airport currently handles 10 million passengers each year.

The Mumbai airport, he said, was constrained due to lack of land. To overcome this, the plan is to construct two to three high-speed taxiways to improve the turnaround time of aircraft entering the airport.

The new taxiways and improved air traffic control procedures could increase the number of aircraft movements handled by the airport to 37-38 per hour, against 28 movements currently. This will increase the capacity of the Mumbai airport by 10-15 per cent. However, he added that the existing airport in the city was expected to reach saturation point by 2012. There is, therefore, a need to begin work on a new airport facility now, he said.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation is studying the feasibility of dedicating one of the terminals in Delhi for low-cost operations. The terminal will be geared for quick aircraft turnaround, he said.

The Ministry is also studying the possibility of shifting all helicopter traffic and operations by small private aircraft in Mumbai to the Juhu aerodrome.
