Kolkata , March 2

THE Kolkata Port Trust hopes to end the current financial year (2004-05) with a traffic throughput of about 46 million tonnes (mt) and thus to rank second among the major ports.

Of this, the share of Haldia, it is estimated, will be over 36 mt and that of Kolkata Dock System a little less than 10 mt. In 2003-04, with a traffic throughput of 41.26 mt (Haldia 32.66 and Kolkata dock system 8.6 mt), the port maintained its third position among major ports for the second consecutive year.

Till February this year (i.e. April to February 2004-05), the throughput was 40.65 mt, posting 9.5 per cent growth over the same period last year. Haldia handled 32.307 mt of traffic and Kolkata Dock System 8.35 mt.

The throughput of iron ore for exports at Haldia at 4.739 mt posted 30 per cent growth so far. The coking coal throughput at 4.675 mt too posted around 12 per cent increase. The throughput of crude and petroleum products at 10.724 mt (9.428 mt in the same period last year) and 3.662 mt (3.542 mt), respectively showed improvement.

At Kolkata Dock System, the container throughput at 1,44,409 TEUs against 1,09,786 TEUs, showed a jump of 30 per cent. The container throughput at Haldia, however, posted a negative growth. During the period, the throughput was 1,18,139 TEUs against 1,20,965 TEUs in the same period last year.
