Canara Bank lends Rs 45 cr to SHGs in Bangalore rural

CANARA Bank has extended credit to 500 self-help groups (SHGs) amounting to Rs 45 crore in the Bangalore rural district.

As part of the credit support for rural development, the bank has funded the purchase of tractors by farmers. It has also organised a rural credit camp in the district.

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Annappaya, General Manager, said that the bank had already extended to support amounting to Rs 180 crore to SHGs across the country.

Canara Bank has an active rural micro-finance programme and hopes to cover at least one lakh SHGs by March 2006.

The bank has intensified lending initiatives to the farming and rural communities in the country, according to him.

The areas identified for lending included farm mechanisation, development, setting up of rural warehouses, and horticulture activities.

Canara Bank has adopted Sonnhallipura under the Adarsha Grama project, to coincide with its Platinum Jubilee.

Further, as part of the bank's social banking activities, it has promoted entrepreneurship activities by women.

The bank is involved in vocational training of women in rural areas, particularly to women SHGs, for upgradation of skills and funding them for setting up micro-enterprises.
