Freescale plans ramp-up here

Our Bureau

Bangalore , March 2

FREESCALE Semiconductor Inc, a US-based designer and manufacturer of embedded semiconductors, is planning tie-ups with Indian software vendors even as it seeks to ramp up its operations in Noida and Bangalore. Freescale was known as the Semiconductor Products Sector before its spin-off from Motorola Inc last year.

Mr Sumit Sadana, Senior Vice-President (Strategy), said that his company was looking at leveraging the design resources in India and would scale up operations aggressively over the next few years.

However, he refused to spell out the details of the company's hiring and investment plans in India.

The company has about 300 persons in India, with some 250 at its R&D centre in Noida and another team of 55 engineers in Bangalore, which came into Freescale's fold following the recent acquisition of Prairie Comm.

Prairie Comm is a private manufacturer of cellular products, including software, system-on-chip and platform designs.

While the Bangalore centre would focus exclusively on developing software, the Noida centre will continue with designing silicon products, Mr Sadana said.

"Over the next few years, the Indian operations would emerge as the second largest R&D base for Freescale outside of the US."

Freescale is looking for partnerships and alliances with Indian software vendors to create platforms and solutions around its products.
