THE expenditure on interest payments and debt servicing in the Revised Estimates for 2004-05 has been put at about Rs 1,26,000 crore, about Rs 3,600 crore lower than what had been budgeted for.

With the promised hike in interest payments on the employees' provident fund, these expenditures have, however, shot up once again.

Budget Estimates for 2005-06, at Rs 1,33,945 crore, are about Rs 8,000 crore higher than the Revised Estimates for 2004-05.

Clarifications are awaited on what proportion of this hike is due to the hike in interest payment on EPF, and indeed, whether the budgeted hike will be sufficient to make good all of the additional interest commitment on the scheme.
