Visakhapatnam , March 3

THE container trade in Visakhapatnam has made rapid strides in recent times and by the end of the financial year it may touch 50,000 TEUs, according to Mr H.B Ayub Khan, Deputy General Manager, Maxicon Shipping Agencies Private Ltd.

At a press meet here on Thursday, he said that so far the container terminal here had handled 41,000 TEUs and, in all probability, the figure might go up to 50,000. "Maxicon Shipping Agencies and Seamaster Shipping and Logistics Private Ltd — both subsidiaries of Seaways Shipping Ltd — control the container cargo to a large extent here. Captain K. Vijay Gopal, recently promoted as the Chief Executive Officer, is largely responsible for the remarkable performance of the two companies," he said.

He said Captain Vijay Gopal had joined the Seaways group in 1999 with the experience of more than 20 years at the sea commanding general cargo and container cargo vessels. "Through his efforts, it has become possible to commence feeder vessel services and liner services from Vizag. The container trade here could get a fillip," he said.
