Interglobe pushes back launch of new airline

Ashwini Phadnis

New Delhi , March 3

THE launch of a new airline which was to be promoted by Interglobe Enterprises Ltd has been pushed back for now. The company's Managing Director, Mr Rahul Bhatia, told Business Line that plans of setting up an airline are being reviewed.

"At present, capacity in the aviation sector is way larger than demand. The situation is unlikely to ease just yet with a host of new entrants taking to the skies in the near future. We will have to see the evolution in the next couple of years," he said. InterGlobe Enterprises is a travel corporation that services all requirements of the travel and tourism industry through its various dedicated business units.

The company had been given an in-principle no objection certification by the Government early last year to start an airline.

While Interglobe is "going slow" on its plans to launch an airline, Mr Parvez Damania, Executive Director of Kingfisher airline, said: "We will start operations with an Airbus A-320 aircraft on May 7."
