New Mangalore port handles record traffic

THE New Mangalore Port handled a record traffic of 30.67 million tonnes till the end of February during the current financial year against 23.59 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year, a growth of 29.59 per cent.

A press release by the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said here on Thursday this growth rate is the highest among the major ports in the country. The port is maintaining the highest growth rate for the third consecutive year.

The port handled 4.90 million tonnes of iron ore fines and lumps till the end of February as against 1.09 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The port witnessed 47 per cent growth in container traffic during the period. In February, it handled 102 vessels against the earlier record of 91 vessels in January, the release added.
