Nalco-PIL impasse hits shipment at Paradip port

Kolkata , March 3

THE shipment of containerised exports through Paradip port has come to a halt. There has been no shipment for over a month now.

National Aluminium Company (Nalco), the public sector aluminium giant that uses the port for exporting ingots in containers, is yet to renew the contract with PIL, the Singapore-based shipping line so far handling the company's exports.

Differences are believed to have surfaced between Nalco and PIL over the freight, with the shipping line insisting on an upward revision of freight in keeping with the present market situation, according to informed sources.

The container throughput at Paradip is attributed to Nalco.

Till January this year, the port handled 31,357 tonnes of exports in containers (2,281 TEUs), of which 31,269 tonnes were on account of Nalco.

In 2003-04, the port handled 60,230 tonnes of exports in containers (4,548 TEUs), of which Nalco's share was 49,629 tonnes.

The corresponding figures for the previous year (2003-03) were 33,121 tonnes (2,694 TEUs) of which Nalco's share was 26,087 tonnes.

Meanwhile, the port authorities have urged Nalco for an early resolution of the impasse and resumption of the shipments in containers.

The present situation, if allowed to continue, will lead to diversion of the traffic to other ports, particularly Visakhapatnam port, it is felt.
