THE West Bengal Government is planning to rejuvenate Howrah city, which used to be known in the olden days as the Ruhr Valley of India for its famed forging and casting units. The project will be taken up in collaboration with the Department of International Development (DFID) of the UK.
The State Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Mr Asok Bhattacharya, was speaking at a workshop on Kolkata's architectural heritage and urban regeneration at the British Council here on Thursday. He said that the Government has asked all the municipalities and Zila Parishads in the State to form expert committees for the listing, preservation and restoration of heritage structures.
Mr Bhattacharya said that following the advise of an expert committee, the State Government had framed the West Bengal Heritage Act in 2001. He also lauded the recent drive by Kolkata Municipal Corporation in protecting and restoring the city's heritage monuments.
