CELLULAR users in the country's coastal regions could start getting cyclone warning signals well in advance.
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) will be meeting various cellular operators in order to explore the possibility of using cell phones as a dissemination media.
"We plan to meet all the cellular operators over the next few weeks to work out the details of the possibility," Prof V.S. Ramamurthy, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), told reporters on the sidelines of a conference. Mobile companies with whom DST is discussing the proposal include BSNL, Bharti TeleVentures, Reliance Infocomm and Hutch.
The data collected by Indian Meteorological Department is fairly accurate. Even if the primary data could be shared with people in the coastal region, it would be of help, said Mr Ramamurthy. Asked about the commercial arrangement, he said the specific details would be discussed during the meeting. "We aim to provide warnings to about one million people to start with," he said, adding that IMD will not provide weather advisories to start with. Earlier in the conference, the Minister for Science and Technology, Mr Kapil Sibal, said that nanotechnology and stem cells have a huge potential to put the country on the road to becoming a developed nation in the years to come. "With the work being carried out in these disciplines, the country is going to be the hub for pharmaceuticals, clinical research and biotechnology," he added.
