WWF award to CIFT scientists

Our Bureau

Kochi , March 4

THE first-ever International Smart Gear Award of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has been won by a team of CIFT scientists consisting of Dr M.R. Boopendranath (Principal Scientist) Dr P. Pravin (senior Scientist), Mr T.R. Gibinkumar (senior Research Fellow) and Mr S. Sabu (senior Research Fellow).

The award is for the development of a concept in by-catch reduction and shrimp sorting in bottom-operated commercial shrimp trawl nets. The gadget called Juvenile Fish excluder cum Shrimp Sorting Device (JFE-SSD) is fitted to the throat section of the trawl net in front of the cod end. The by-catch of juveniles and non-target species is detrimental to the sustainability of fisheries.
