Mumbai to host shipping summit

Our Bureau

Kolkata , March 4

INDIA Shipping Summit, a dedicated forum to tap the potential of the country's shipping sector now poised for a big leap forward, will be held in Mumbai in the third week of September.

To be organised jointly by international maritime publishers, Trade Winds and Seatrade, the summit will have the backing of the Shipping Ministry and various regulatory authorities, it is learnt.

Various constituents of the maritime sector including shipowners, shipbuilders, shippers, policy makers, maritime entrepreneurs and the growing number of people associated with ship management and operations worldwide are expected to participate in the two-day summit.

With nearly 95 per cent of the country's foreign trade being sea-borne, shipping plays a crucial role in its economic development. The shipping sector's role is going to increase manifold in coming years as the country is compared with China in terms of growth and opportunities.

However, much needs to be done to improve the port and maritime infrastructure, if necessary, through foreign investments, it is felt.

The summit is also likely to have significant participation from West Asia, which is perceived as India's gateway to trade with Europe and the US.
